   About Tournaments

Tournaments are a great way to test your archery skills throughout the year and set new goals for yourself. JOAD clubs most often compete in USA Archery sanctioned tournaments and scores are recorded and published at the state and national level. Tournaments generally take place indoors from October to March and outdoors from May to September, so there is really no "off season" in archery.

Indoor tournaments feature shorter distances at smaller target faces, while outdoor tournaments feature long distances (often multiple distances) at larger target faces. In addition, there are various other styles of archery one can contest in, including field and 3D, which may be held by non-JOAD groups but are a lot of fun to shoot in!

Most tournaments are open to all archers regardless of skill or experience level, and beginners are encouraged to try their hand at their first tournament relatively early in their archery endeavors. Archers can choose to only go to a few tournaments near their home or in their state, or may choose to travel to other states in order to compete more frequently and/or in bigger tournaments. Some national tournaments are held in different locations each year to maximize the number of different archers who can experience national level competition.

Though tournaments can seem daunting and stressful to new archers, they are often very low-key and lots of fun. Meeting other archers, talking "shop," and testing your mettle in competition is a great way to spend a day, regardless of the score!
